Beni Ourain or Beni Mrirt? The Differences Explained

Both come from Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, both are hand-knotted from virgin wool, and at first glance they often look alike: Beni Ourain and Beni Mrirt. Yet there are clear differences – in the wool, in how they feel underfoot, in design and in price. Here I explain what matters and which rug is right for you.

Beni Ourain: the classic

Today, Beni Ourain is the name for the Berber rugs that were made hundreds of years ago for the harsh climate of the Atlas Mountains. They are densely woven and knotted with a double thread. This makes them thick, heavy and wonderfully soft – a rug like this will easily cushion a somersault.

Typical is the natural white or cream base with the well-known black or brown diamond pattern. This graphic design fits into almost any interior style, from a Scandinavian living room to a period apartment. There are now also many modern variations with colour, dots (confetti) or abstract shapes.

Beni Ourain is for you if you are looking for a cosy, robust rug with character – for the living room, bedroom or children’s room.

Beni Mrirt: the refined one

Beni Mrirt rugs are made in the Khenifra / Beni Mrirt region. The weavers use particularly fine virgin wool and knot very densely. The result is a rug that feels softer and more luxurious – almost like a fur – while being very hard-wearing.

Alongside classic all-white diamond designs, contemporary graphic patterns are popular today. The fine wool allows colour shades that suit modern interiors, and even colour gradients. Woven-in patterns are made with a technique in which the design appears tone-on-tone as a relief.

A Beni Mrirt is made in several steps: the women knot and weave, the men take care of washing the rug. Production therefore takes longer – which is also reflected in the price.

Beni Mrirt is for you if you are looking for a particularly high-quality, long-lasting piece, also in a custom size and colour.

How to recognise genuine handwork

  • The back: On hand-knotted rugs you can see the pattern on the back as well, with small irregularities.
  • Small variations: Slightly uneven lines or dimensions are not a flaw but a sign of real handwork.
  • Fringes: They are the ends of the warp threads and part of the rug – they are not sewn on afterwards.

If you’re unsure, feel free to send me a photo of your room. I’ll advise you on which style and size will work. And because I travel to Morocco regularly, I can also source a rug to your wishes directly from the weavers.
